[ 004 · METHOD ]

Method

How Calgary SEO and AEO actually work.

Ranking in Calgary is not one search problem, it is several smaller ones stacked on a technical foundation. Here is the mechanical breakdown of how we approach each one.

Calgary by quadrant

Calgary's Map Pack results shift by neighborhood. A search from Signal Hill and the same search from Auburn Bay can return different local results, because Google weighs the searcher's location as heavily as the keyword itself. A business running one generic Calgary landing page is competing city-wide, while a business with quadrant-aware content, NW, NE, SE, SW, and the downtown core, shows up as the closest relevant result inside each pocket of the city instead of just the biggest one. That is the difference between ranking city-wide and ranking where the buyer actually is standing.

Map Pack ranking versus organic ranking

The 3-pack sitting above the organic results is not scored on the same signals. Google ranks it on three factors: proximity (how close the business is to the searcher or to the area implied by the search), prominence (review count, review quality, backlinks, and general reputation across the web), and relevance (how closely the business profile and the site match what was searched). Organic results below the pack still run on the older SEO signals: content depth, technical health, backlinks, and on-page relevance. A business can sit first in the Map Pack and tenth in organic for the same search, because the two systems weigh different things. Calgary local SEO work has to hit both scoring systems at once, not treat one as a stand-in for the other.

Google Business Profile, the steps that matter

GBP is the fastest-moving lever in local Calgary SEO, and most Calgary listings are half-finished. A full setup means the primary category matched to the exact service (not the closest guess), every relevant secondary category added, service areas listed by the actual Calgary neighborhoods and nearby cities served, the Products and Services sections filled with real line items instead of left blank, weekly Posts tied to real updates, photos added on a schedule instead of once at setup, and Q&A seeded with the questions buyers actually ask before someone else posts a wrong answer first. Each of those is a direct ranking signal, not decoration.

Service-area business, no address, still ranks

Not every business that ranks has a storefront. Google Business Profile supports two address models. A storefront business publishes a public street address and customers walk in. A service-area business, the model most agencies, contractors, cleaners, and mobile trades use, hides the address and instead lists service areas: specific cities, neighborhoods, or a radius around a hidden base location. Both models are eligible for the Map Pack. The service-area setup still needs an accurate address on file with Google for verification (it stays hidden from the public), a service area list that matches where the business actually works instead of an inflated wishlist, and the same category, review, and content signals a storefront needs. Meridian15 runs as a service-area business, no public office address, Calgary and the surrounding area set as our service area, configured the same way described here.

NAP consistency and local citations

NAP is name, address, phone number, and it has to match exactly everywhere it appears: the website footer, the Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yelp, industry directories, and the LocalBusiness schema in the site's code. A phone number that reads differently on the website than on the GBP listing, a tracking number on one and the direct line on the other, breaks the match Google is trying to confirm. Citations, mentions of the business name, address, and phone on other sites, work the same way local backlinks work: consistent citations across recognized Calgary and Canadian directories signal a real, established business, and inconsistent or duplicate listings actively work against ranking. The fix is mechanical: audit every listing that mentions the business, correct the ones that drift, and remove or merge duplicates instead of leaving old listings live.

Review velocity

Review velocity matters more than review count. Google reads a steady trickle of new reviews as a sign the business is active right now, so 40 reviews spread across two years and 40 reviews from one rushed week send different signals even though the total is identical. The mechanical fix: ask at the actual moment of delivery, job completion, checkout, pickup, not in a bulk email blast to the whole customer list, and never gate who gets asked based on how happy they seemed. That gating violates platform policy and both Google and third-party tools flag the pattern. Respond to every review, good and critical, inside a few days. The response itself is a freshness signal.

What local SEO in Calgary actually includes

Local SEO Calgary work is not one task, it is a stack of small technical and content decisions that compound. On the page itself: title tags and meta descriptions that name the service and the city instead of just the service, header tags that describe what's actually offered in plain language, LocalBusiness schema that matches the visible NAP exactly, and internal links connecting related service and neighborhood pages instead of leaving them isolated. Off the page: the Google Business Profile setup, review velocity, and citation consistency covered above. None of these signals move a ranking alone. A page with strong on-page optimization and a neglected GBP profile stalls in the Map Pack. A fully optimized GBP profile linking to a thin, generic website stalls in organic. Local SEO services in Calgary that only touch one half of that split are optimizing half the problem.

Technical SEO specifics

Technical SEO is the part that has nothing to do with the words on the page. Before we touch content we check canonical tags pointing to the clean URL instead of a duplicate with a tracking parameter, a sitemap that only lists real, indexable pages, a robots.txt that is not accidentally blocking crawl paths, Core Web Vitals (particularly Largest Contentful Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift, the two most Calgary small business sites fail), structured data that actually matches the page's visible content, and HTTPS with no redirect chains eating crawl budget. A site can have strong copy and still lose to a competitor with a faster, cleaner technical base, because ranking systems weigh both.

Where AEO differs from SEO

SEO earns a ranking position. AEO earns a citation inside someone else's answer, and the mechanics are different. An answer engine like ChatGPT or Perplexity does not return ten blue links, it reads a handful of pages, extracts a claim, and attributes it or does not. That means crawler access rules have to separate two different bot categories: training crawlers decide whether your content trains a future model, retrieval crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User, and PerplexityBot) decide whether your site can be read and cited in a live answer right now, and most robots.txt files were never checked against that second list. Content also has to state the answer in one clear sentence instead of burying it in a paragraph, and schema has to describe what the page actually says instead of what we wish it said. We track whether a brand gets cited across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude, the same four systems most Calgary businesses have never checked.
