What a Local SEO Agency Actually Does, and How to Tell If You Need One

The short answer. A local SEO agency works on three surfaces: the map pack, the organic listings beneath it, and the citation and review signals that corroborate both. The map pack takes the top three positions on almost every local search, so a large share of the outcome is decided before conventional ranking factors matter at all. Understand which surface a proposal is actually addressing before you sign it.

One structural fact shapes every local search decision. We measured 18 local service results pages across Canada and the United States and 17 of 18 led with a map pack, which occupies the first three positions before a single conventional listing appears. The same measurement found zero AI Overviews on those pages, so unlike categories saturated by generated answers, the click below the map is still genuinely available. The full data is published here.

The three surfaces, and why the difference matters

What a local SEO engagement can actually move
The map pack
Business profile, proximity, reviews, consistent business information
Organic listings below the map
On-page content, site structure, topical depth, links
The corroboration layer
Citations, structured data, third-party profiles that agree with each other

These are not interchangeable and they do not move on the same timeline. Profile and citation work can shift map visibility in weeks. Organic movement on a competitive local term takes months, because it depends on content and third-party corroboration accumulating.

The practical consequence for a buyer: a proposal that promises fast results is usually describing map pack work, and a proposal that talks about content and authority is describing the slower organic surface. Both are legitimate. Confusing them is how expectations get set wrong.

What proximity means for what is achievable

Map results weight physical distance from the searcher heavily. A business in one part of a city will struggle to appear in map results for searches made across town, regardless of how good its profile is. That is a constraint of the format, not a failure of the work.

This is worth establishing early, because it determines whether the map pack is realistically your channel at all. If it is not, the organic listing beneath it becomes the target, and that is a content and authority problem rather than a profile problem.

Five questions that separate a real engagement from a reseller

Ask before signing
What is produced in month one, and by whom?
Vague answers usually mean outsourced templates
Which of the three surfaces is this work aimed at?
A proposal that cannot answer is selling activity
What happens to the work if we stop?
Content and citations persist. Rented links do not
How is progress reported, and against what baseline?
A baseline captured after work starts is not a baseline
What are you not going to do?
An honest scope has edges

That last question is the most revealing one. Every real engagement has boundaries, and a provider who claims to cover everything at a fixed retainer is either underscoping the work or overcharging for it.

What we would tell you not to buy

Anything sold on ranking guarantees. Local results vary by the searcher's exact location, so two people in the same city can see different orderings for the same query. A guaranteed position is a promise about something the seller does not control.

Bulk citation submissions as a headline deliverable. Consistent business information matters, but it is a hygiene task with a ceiling, not an ongoing growth channel worth a monthly fee on its own.

Reporting that leads with impressions and never mentions calls, forms or bookings. Impressions are an input. In local search particularly, where intent is high and the buying decision is fast, the outcome is measurable and should be measured.

If you want the conventional-ranking side of this handled properly, that is what our Calgary SEO and AEO work covers, and the service page sets out the scope.

Questions

What does a local SEO agency actually do?

Three things. It works on your map pack presence, which is driven by your business profile, proximity, reviews and consistent business information. It works on the organic listings beneath the map, which is conventional on-page and content work aimed at local intent. And it maintains the citations and structured data that corroborate who and where you are.

Is local SEO different from regular SEO?

The technical fundamentals overlap almost entirely. What differs is the target. Local results are led by a map pack that takes the first three positions, so a large share of the available attention is decided by profile and proximity signals rather than by page content alone.

Do AI Overviews affect local search?

Not yet in our measurement. Across 18 local service queries in the United States and Canada, zero returned an AI Overview, while all 20 queries we tested in a global software category did. Local results still return a conventional page led by a map.

How much should local SEO cost?

Pricing varies widely and the honest answer is that the deliverables matter more than the number. Ask what is produced each month, who does it, and what happens in month one versus month six. A retainer that cannot describe its own deliverables is buying you activity, not outcomes.

How long does local SEO take?

Profile and citation work can move map pack visibility within weeks because those signals are checked frequently. Organic movement on competitive local terms is slower, generally several months, because it depends on content and corroboration accumulating.

Can I do local SEO myself?

The highest-value parts are genuinely doable in-house: keeping business information consistent everywhere, asking customers for reviews, and describing your services in plain language on your own site. Agencies earn their fee on the parts that need sustained attention and tooling.
