LLM SEO Tools: What the Category Contains, and the One Question That Sorts It

The short answer. The LLM SEO tools category contains two different products wearing one name: trackers that measure how models describe and cite you, and assistants that use models to produce content faster. The question that sorts them is whether the product has its own data or only a model. We measured this category rather than trialling the products, and the measurement says something useful on its own: just over half of what ranks is published by the vendors being ranked.

"LLM SEO" is a young enough phrase that it has not settled on a meaning. The results page shows it. Alongside the visibility trackers you get general AI writing tools, a Reddit thread of practitioners asking each other what they use, and a LinkedIn post comparing fourteen products. That mix is a fair signal that buyers are not sure what they are shopping for either.

What ranks for the term

A sample of the "llm seo tools" results page
#2, Reddit
Practitioners asking what others actually use
#4, Surfer SEO
13 Best AI SEO Tools in 2026
#5, LLMrefs
Vendor homepage, generative AI search analytics
#6, PageOptimizer Pro

#7, AIclicks

#13, LinkedIn
One practitioner comparing 14 tools

Note how much of that is either a vendor or a listicle. The two results carrying the most independent signal are the Reddit thread and the LinkedIn comparison, which is a reasonable hint about where practitioners go when the published pages are mostly written by sellers.

The dividing question: data or model

Every product in this category sits on one side of a single line. Does it have its own data source, or does it only have access to a model?

Sorting the category
Has its own data
Can measure: visibility, citations, competitor share, change over time
Has only a model
Can produce: drafts, clusters, briefs, rewrites
Claims to measure with only a model
Treat performance claims as unverified

That third row is the one to watch. A model with no live data about your site cannot report your visibility. It can produce a confident paragraph that sounds like a report, which is a meaningfully different thing, and the failure is hard to see because the output reads well.

The axis that actually differentiates trackers

Among tools that genuinely measure, the real differences are narrow and worth checking directly.

Engine coverage. Models disagree with each other about who to recommend, so a tracker watching one engine gives you a partial picture. Coverage across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode is the first thing to confirm.

Prompt control. Whether you can define the questions that matter to your business, or only accept a generated set. Generic prompts produce generic visibility data.

Refresh cadence and volatility handling. Answers move between sessions. A tool that samples rarely will show you noise and call it a trend.

Citation sources. Whether it tells you which pages the model drew on, not only whether you were named. That is the part you can act on, because it points at the third-party pages worth influencing.

Whether this category matters to you at all

AI Overview coverage: tools category vs local services

Before you buy anything here, check whether AI answers are actually intercepting your customers. In our measurement every one of 20 queries in this global research category returned an AI Overview, and zero of 18 local service queries did, in both the United States and Canada. Local searches still return a conventional page led by a map.

If your customers search locally, this tooling is solving a problem you do not yet have, and Google Business Profile is a better place for the money. If they research globally, the generated answer is already standing between you and the click. The full comparison is published here with the data.

What this is and is not. We measured this category: 20 search results pages, 330 organic results, classified and published as open data. We have not trialled these products. Where you see a claim about a tool below it describes what the category contains and how the vendors position themselves, not our verdict on their software. Any page that ranks a tool first without saying how it was tested deserves the same scepticism, and just over half the results in this category are published by the vendors themselves.

Questions

What is an LLM SEO tool?

Broadly, software concerned with how large language models treat your brand. In practice the category splits into trackers that measure whether models like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode mention and cite you, and assistants that use models to produce SEO content faster.

How is LLM SEO different from regular SEO?

The ranking surface changes. Classic SEO competes for a position in a list of links. LLM visibility competes to be named inside a generated answer, which is influenced by how clearly your content states what you do and whether independent sources corroborate it. The underlying content quality work overlaps heavily.

Do I need to track every model separately?

They disagree, so a single-engine reading is incomplete. Coverage across models is the main axis on which these tools differ, and it is the first thing to check, because a tool that only watches one engine will report a partial picture of your visibility.

Can I do this without a tool?

You can spot-check by asking models questions in your category and recording what they say. It is worth doing once to see reality. It does not scale, because answers vary by phrasing, session and region, so manual checks cannot separate a real change from noise.

Do AI Overviews affect every industry equally?

No, and the difference is stark. In our measurement, all 20 AI search tool queries returned an AI Overview while zero of 18 local service queries did, in both the United States and Canada. Whether this category matters to you depends heavily on what your customers search.

Has Meridian15 tested these tools?

No, and the page says so. We measured the category as a search problem and published 330 classified results as open data. We have not trialled the products, so nothing here ranks them on software quality.
