ChatGPT SEO Tools Means Two Different Things. Half the Results Answer the Wrong One.
The short answer. "ChatGPT SEO tools" is one phrase covering two unrelated categories. One uses ChatGPT to produce SEO work: drafts, keyword clusters, meta descriptions. The other monitors whether ChatGPT names your brand when someone asks it for a recommendation. Nearly half the pages ranking for the term answer the intent you did not have. Work out which problem you are solving before you look at a single product.
We pulled the results page for this term as part of a wider measurement of the AI search tools category. The thing that stands out is not which tools win. It is that the page cannot decide what the question means.
Read those titles as a set. Positions 1, 5 and 9 answer "how do I use ChatGPT to do SEO." Position 4 answers "how do I get ChatGPT to cite me." Those are different jobs, different budgets, and usually different software. Google is serving both because searchers mean both.
Category one: ChatGPT as the worker
This is ChatGPT, or a wrapper around it, producing SEO output. Drafting and editing copy. Clustering a keyword export into topics. Writing meta descriptions at volume. Turning a messy content audit into a plan. The tools here compete on workflow, templates and integration with your existing stack.
What this category cannot do is tell you how you are performing. A language model has no live index of your rankings, your competitors, or your citations. Anything it says about your current position is either supplied by a connected data source or invented. That distinction matters more than any feature comparison: if the tool has no data connection, treat its performance claims as prose.
Category two: ChatGPT as the surface you are trying to appear in
This is the AEO side. The job is to answer a question you cannot answer by looking at Google: when a buyer asks ChatGPT for a recommendation in your category, are you named? Which competitors are? What sources is the answer drawing from?
These tools work by running prompt sets on a schedule, recording what the model returns, and tracking mentions and cited sources over time. That is genuinely not something you can eyeball, because answers vary by phrasing, session and region, so a single manual check tells you very little.
The honest limit: monitoring reports the outcome, it does not cause it. Getting cited comes from the same fundamentals as any other kind of visibility. Being clearly described, structured so a machine can parse what you do, and corroborated somewhere other than your own website. A tracker tells you whether that work landed.
How to tell which one a product is
The pricing question is the fastest tell. Monitoring products meter what they check for you. Production products meter what they make for you.
One structural fact worth knowing before you shop
When we classified all 330 organic results across the category, just over half came from a company selling a product in it, and those vendors held 53.2% of top ten positions. About 31.2% of everything ranking was a vendor's own "best of" list, which in practice means a ranking authored by one of the ranked parties.
That is not necessarily bad faith. Vendors know their category and write about it well. But it does mean the ordering you are reading was usually chosen by a participant, and the ordering is the part you are most tempted to trust. The full dataset, including which domains we classified as vendors, is published here so you can check ours.
What this is and is not. We measured this category: 20 search results pages, 330 organic results, classified and published as open data. We have not trialled these products. Where you see a claim about a tool below it describes what the category contains and how the vendors position themselves, not our verdict on their software. Any page that ranks a tool first without saying how it was tested deserves the same scepticism, and just over half the results in this category are published by the vendors themselves.
Questions
What are ChatGPT SEO tools?
The phrase covers two unrelated categories. The first uses ChatGPT to produce SEO work: drafting content, clustering keywords, writing meta descriptions. The second monitors whether ChatGPT mentions your brand when users ask questions in your category. They solve opposite problems and are usually not the same product.
Which one do I actually need?
If your problem is producing more content or working faster, you want the assistant category. If your problem is that customers ask ChatGPT for recommendations and you are not named, you want the visibility monitoring category. Buying the wrong one is the most common mistake in this space because the search term does not distinguish them.
Can ChatGPT itself replace an SEO tool?
For drafting, clustering and first-pass analysis it is genuinely useful. It cannot tell you what you rank for, what your competitors rank for, or whether an AI engine cites you, because it has no live index of your performance. Those require a tool with its own data.
Do these tools actually improve AI visibility?
Monitoring tools report visibility, they do not create it. Being cited by an AI engine follows from the same things that earn citations generally: clear structured content, being named alongside your category, and third-party corroboration. A tracker tells you whether that is working.
Is this category dominated by the vendors themselves?
Largely. In our measurement of 330 results across the category, 51.5% were published by a company selling a tool in that same category, and vendors held 53.2% of top ten positions. Roughly 31.2% of all results were a vendor-authored "best of" list that included the vendor.
Has Meridian15 tested these tools?
No, and we say so on the page. We measured the category as a search results problem, publishing 330 classified results as open data. We have not trialled the products, so nothing here is a verdict on their software quality.
