Google Business Profile Optimization: What Moves the Map Pack and What Does Not

The short answer. Four things move map pack placement: primary category, proximity, reviews, and consistency of business information. Category is the most underestimated and proximity is the one you cannot change. Most of the rest, including posts and photo volume, are conversion features worth doing for other reasons.

One structural fact applies to all local service search. We measured 18 local service results pages across Canada and the United States: 17 of 18 led with a map pack holding the first three positions, and zero returned an AI Overview. So the organic click below the map is still available here, unlike categories where a generated answer takes it. The data is published here.

What actually moves placement

Ranked by influence, and whether you control it
Primary category
High influence. Fully in your control. Most underestimated
Proximity to the searcher
High influence. Not in your control at all
Review volume and recency
High influence. Slow but fully earnable
Information consistency
Moderate. Hygiene with a ceiling, but the ceiling is real

Primary category deserves the attention it rarely gets. It defines which searches the profile is eligible for at all. A business sitting in an adjacent or broader category is competing with one hand tied, and no amount of profile completeness compensates for it. This is worth auditing against the categories that competitors appearing above you have chosen.

The factor you cannot fix

Proximity weighs heavily and is entirely outside your control. A business in one part of a city will struggle to appear for searches made across town regardless of how strong the profile is.

That is not a failure of the work, it is a property of the format, and knowing it early is what stops money being spent on an outcome that was never available. If the map pack is not realistically reachable for the searches that matter to you, the organic listing beneath it becomes the target, and that is a content and authority problem instead.

What is conversion, not ranking

Posts, photos, product listings and attributes are worth maintaining, but for what they do once someone sees the profile rather than for whether they see it. They influence choice, not placement.

This distinction matters because these are the items most often sold as a monthly ranking service. Doing them is fine. Being told they will move placement is not accurate.

What does nothing, or worse

Keyword stuffing the business name. It can work briefly, it violates the guidelines, and the downside is suspension, which removes the profile entirely. The trade is bad on its own terms.

Bulk citation submissions as an ongoing service. Consistency of business information genuinely matters, but it is a fix with an end point, not a monthly channel. Once information is consistent, submitting more of it does nothing.

Review gating. Filtering who gets asked so only happy customers are prompted violates the guidelines and risks the review set being removed. Ask everyone, and fix the reason unhappy customers are unhappy.

For how this fits alongside conventional ranking work, the local SEO breakdown covers the three surfaces, and the reviews piece deals with the part that takes longest.

Questions

What actually affects Google Business Profile ranking?

Primary category, proximity to the searcher, review volume and recency, and consistency of business information across the web. Category choice is the single most underestimated of these, because the wrong primary category caps what you can appear for regardless of everything else.

How important is the primary category?

More than almost anything else you control. It defines the set of searches you are eligible to appear for. A profile in a broader or adjacent category will underperform against a competitor in the exact one, no matter how complete the rest of the profile is.

Do posts on a Business Profile help ranking?

They are best treated as a conversion and freshness feature rather than a ranking lever. They can influence whether someone chooses you once you appear, which is worth doing, but they are not the reason a profile places in the map pack.

How much does proximity matter?

A great deal, and it is the factor you cannot change. A business will struggle to appear for searches across a city regardless of profile quality. Recognising this early determines whether the map pack is realistically a channel for you at all.

Does keyword stuffing the business name work?

It can produce a short-term effect and it violates the guidelines, which makes it a suspension risk. Given that a suspension removes the profile entirely, the risk-to-reward is poor even setting the ethics aside.

How do reviews affect placement?

Volume and recency both matter, and they are judged relative to the other businesses appearing for the same search rather than against an absolute number. A steady flow reads differently from a large count that stopped two years ago.
